Why Maharashtra

A recently done global study has revealed that the Arabian Sea near the Mumbai coast is the most polluted among the World. Mumbai dumps around 2100 mm liters of waste daily in the sea. Taking it on a serious note, the Government is planning to spend INR 10,000 crores to set up seven new plants to minimize the problem. MCGM is also working on expanding wastewater treatment facilities of Mumbai to include reuse plans on it. Tenders for STP's at Bhandup, Dharavi, Ghatkopar, Versova, Worli are out recently. Tenders for Bandra and Malad are expected soon.

The State Government has also started making use of the sewage water for industrial purpose. The Chandrapur 40 MLD tertiary treatment of water with pipelines at a project cost of INR 137 crore is a first in the state, and after this project, the government can come up with many more projects like this.

The population of Mumbai is projected to grow from current 13 million to 16 million by 2021. With rising population, economic growth and a demand for a better environment and healthy life water and wastewater treatment have become one of the focused areas. So, water is a precious resource in the region.

Drinking water scarcity is one of the major concerns in the Mumbai city. Demand for drinking water is continuously increasing over the period of time in the city but the supply is stagnant. The daily supply of drinking water to the city population is inadequate and there is a mismatch between demand and supply. The government of Maharashtra is working on the various plans in order to solve this ever-increasing problem of the city, and hence it is opening up doors for the water companies to come up with their new project ideas and products.

This financial capital of the country is already serving several growth opportunities to the water companies and there is no doubt that it will be increased in the near future.
