The National Green Tribunal has imposed an environmental compensation of Rs 3,500 crore on West Bengal for failure in the treatment of solid and liquid waste. The green bench noted that the West Bengal government did not take much initiative in prioritising solid and sewage treatment plants in urban areas, news agency PTI reported. Government has sanctioned 13 projects pertaining to geo-mapping, sewerage management, riverfront development among others for conservation of resources and management of infrastructure along the Ganga river system as part of National Mission for Clean Ganga. As part of its efforts to achieve a better rank in the next edition of Swachh Survekshan, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has formulated an action plan to revive sewage treatment plants to reduce carbon emissions under its ambit.
