Water is a scarce and at-risk resource, facing pressures from climate change, population growth, urbanization, and pollution. Mike Morris, Technical Director at Stantec, highlights the need for a holistic approach to sustainable management that considers the interconnectedness of various factors within defined catchment areas.
Integrated Catchment System Management (ICSM) aims to ensure sustainable management of water and related resources by recognizing the interactions between social, political, and environmental elements. This approach encourages collaboration among stakeholders to develop shared visions for river catchments. For example, United Utilities partnered with Greater Manchester Combined Authority and The Environment Agency to create an Integrated Water Management Plan that reflects both environmental and cultural values.
The benefits of ICSM include improved water quality, reduced flood and drought risks through nature-based solutions, enhanced biodiversity, and increased social and economic opportunities. By fostering community engagement, ICSM effectively addresses water related challenges while promoting sustainable development.
Stantec has joined other organizations in signing the Catchment Management Declaration, committing to collaborative strategies for managing water resources and tackling global environmental challenges.
