NieuWater, Nijhuis Saur Industries, and Jotem have joined forces to scale up BODAC® technology globally. Combining BODAC BioActive® carbon + Ozone Strong Water (OSW), BODAC® delivers superior water purification, pharmaceutical residue removal, and biofouling control while cutting costs and reducing environmental impact. Two leading Dutch sewage treatment plants have chosen BODAC® plus OSW and others are piloting.
BODAC® a proven success by NieuWater
At WWTP Emmen, BODAC® has been removing over 70% of pharmaceutical residues for 15 years, with no need to replace activated carbon. This lowers chemical use by 90%, extends RO membrane lifespan, and offers the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over 25 years.
BODAC® for biofouling control
The smart integration of ultrafiltration (UF), BODAC®, and reverse osmosis (RO) reduces chemical usage by 90% compared to conventional processes. Even after 15 years, the original RO membranes remain fully operational, with no need to replace or reactivate the activated carbon.
Gerrit Veenendaal, Managing Director at NieuWater BV, states:
“BODAC® with BODAC BioActive® carbon as a filter material does not need to be replaced, significantly reducing operational costs and environmental impact.”
Additionally, NSI integrates BODAC® with its proven MicroOxi technology, creating a modular solution that removes over 90% of all micropollutants from sewage treatment plant effluent.
BODAC® combined with Ozone Strong Water (OSW)
To best serve the municipal market, BODAC® has been further developed into a pressure-less variant.
Eddie Broeders, NSI Global Business Development Manager Municipal, states: “The launch of the groundbreaking new solution of BODAC® + OSW during Aquatech is set to revolutionize municipal water treatment. This cutting-edge combination delivers unmatched efficiency in micropollutant removal, offering municipalities a cost-effective, low CO₂ footprint alternative to conventional treatment methods. The synergy of BODAC® + OSW forms a powerful, sustainable barrier against contaminants—achieving superior purification at a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and reduced CO₂ footprint. Unlike traditional approaches, the activated carbon in our system never needs replacement, and the optimized ozone integration dramatically cuts energy and chemical usage”
Wilbert Menkveld NSI CTO adds: “The choice of BODAC® with the BODAC BioActive® filter material + OSW fits perfectly with our strategy. Within NSI, part of Saur group, we have added these technologies as standard modular building blocks to our toolbox for cost-effective micropollutant removal and water reuse. This enables us to offer our customers the best solutions for a long time and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable water loop.”
Global expansion
A 2024 licensing agreement positions Jotem for small-scale installations and NSI for large-scale projects. Together, they provide cost-effective, future-proof water treatment solutions worldwide.

About NieuWater B.V. | www.nieuwater.com
NieuWater B.V. is a subsidiary of Waterschap Vechtstromen. NieuWater has been producing ultrapure water from the effluent of the sewage treatment plant in Emmen since 2010. This water is intended for industry, particularly oil extraction, but is also extremely suitable to produce hydrogen. Hardly any chemicals are used to produce this very high quality (0.06 µS/cm). To achieve this, BODAC® technology, among others, was developed. The plant is unique and regularly receives interested parties from all over the world.
About Jotem Water Solutions | www.jotem.nl
Jotem Water Solutions B.V., founded in 1965, provides technology and services to produce water with a specific composition or desired quality. To this end, they develop customized solutions and continuously implement new technology. Increasingly complex water issues also require new insights into water treatment. More effective, efficient, flexible and sustainable. These arise on the Jotem work floor, with its innovative Hydropilots as a result. With its pilot installations, they understand organizational issues and create a pilot to solve the issue. Jotem develops a unique solution step by step, in which they bring together the latest technologies and innovate the market. But above all, it provides solutions with which an organization gets the most out of water. Whatever the challenge might be!
