J&K Set to Transform Sanitation Landscape with Used Water Management Project

J&K water management project

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is launching the Used Water Management (UWM) project under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) 2.0 to enhance its sanitation infrastructure. This initiative aims to modernize wastewater management by constructing advanced Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs).

The project will establish essential infrastructure, including sewerage networks and pipelines for efficient wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal, all compliant with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) standards. A comprehensive study will assess the current sewerage systems and treatment facilities to identify deficiencies and estimate wastewater generation based on population trends. Key components include building new STPs and FSTPs, upgrading existing facilities, and developing efficient transport networks for wastewater. The initiative will also explore recycling treated water for non-potable uses like irrigation.

To ensure sustainability, advanced technologies and monitoring systems will be implemented throughout construction. Once operational, the project is expected to reduce environmental pollution from untreated wastewater and improve public health. The Housing and Urban Development Department has engaged expert consultants to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) within six months. While the project’s cost is not specified, timely completion within the SBM 2.0 mission period is essential.
