Reviving the Ganga: Pivotal Sewerage Projects approved in NMCG’s 59th Executive Committee Meeting

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) recently approved several significant projects aimed at river conservation and sanitation management. During the 59th Executive Committee Meeting, chaired by Director-General Shri Rajeev Kumar Mittal, projects worth `272 crore were sanctioned for Chandauli and Manikpur in Uttar Pradesh, along with a 257 crore initiative for Buxar, Bihar.

In Chandauli, a project costing `263 crore will establish a 45 MLD capacity Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) utilizing a hybrid annuity model. This initiative is designed to reinforce the river management system, with operation and maintenance ensured for the next 15 years. Additionally, a `9 crore Faecal Sludge Management Project in Manikpur will develop a 15 KLD capacity treatment plant and a solar power facility, ensuring eco-friendly waste management solutions. In Buxar, Bihar, an ambitious project has been approved at a cost of `257 crore. This initiative will construct a 50 MLD STP along with supporting infrastructure, ensuring robust operation and maintenance for the next 15 years. A key aspect of this project is the construction of an additional 1 MLD capacity STP using nature-based solutions, along with three interception pumping stations and an 8.68 km long sewer network.

To further accelerate river rejuvenation and sanitation management in West Bengal, several initiatives have been approved for Uttarpara Kotrung Municipality. An integrated septage treatment plant will be established at a cost of 8 crore, featuring a 22 KLD faecal sludge treatment plant based on the DBOT model, with provisions for operation and maintenance over the next five years. Through these efforts, the mission continues to lay a strong foundation for effective river rejuvenation and enhanced sanitation management across multiple states.
