Saving Nagarahole: Water Tankers step in as Several Lakes Run Dry

Saving-Nagarahole

As temperatures rise, Nagarahole Tiger Reserve faces increasing water scarcity, with six of 18 lakes in the wildlife-rich Antharsanthe zone drying up. This zone, known for its tigers, elephants, black panthers, deer, pythons, and wild dogs, sits adjacent to the Kabini backwaters.

The Forest Department has responded by deploying water tankers to replenish dry lakes, making multiple trips daily to provide relief to thirsty animals and prevent them from straying into human settlements. The department prioritizes refilling lakes near village outskirts, particularly along the HD Kote-Manandavadi Road, to reduce human-wildlife conflict.

Despite some lakes drying up, others in the deeper forest still hold water thanks to solarpowered borewells. Last year’s good monsoon filled many reservoirs, while the Kabini backwaters continue supporting various species.

The Forest Department has also implemented fire prevention measures, creating fire lines, manning watchtowers, and using motorized spray units on motorcycles to patrol high-risk areas. These efforts ensure swift action against potential wildfires. The Antharasanthe zone remains popular for wildlife sightings, with tourists at Kakanakote Safari Centre enjoying views of tigers, elephants, and other animals navigating the hot terrain.

P.A. Seema, Director of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, emphasized their commitment to ensuring animals don’t face drinking water shortages. Siddaraju, Range Forest Officer of the Antharasanthe zone, confirmed they’re supplying water through tankers, focusing on lakes near forest edges and villages to prevent conflict. These conservation efforts showcase the dedication of forest officials as they work to protect wildlife and nearby communities during challenging summer conditions.
