The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is launching the Used Water Management (UWM) project under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 to modernize its wastewater management systems. The project involves constructing advanced Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs), along with sewerage networks and Intercept & Diversion structures that comply with Central Pollution Control Board standards.

The initiative will begin with a comprehensive study to assess existing sewerage infrastructure and identify deficiencies based on population trends. The project will then implement new systems and upgrade existing ones to meet current and future needs. Key features include building new treatment plants, improving wastewater transport networks, and exploring water recycling for non-potable uses like irrigation and industrial applications.

The project emphasizes sustainability through advanced technologies and robust monitoring systems during construction. Once completed, it aims to reduce environmental pollution from untreated wastewater, protect public health by preventing water source contamination, and promote water conservation through reuse. The Housing and Urban Development Department of Jammu and Kashmir has requested expert consultants to prepare a Detailed Project Report within six months, though the project cost remains unspecified. The initiative must be completed within the SBM 2.0 mission period.
